If you’re one of the 56 million people affected by hair loss, you may be interested in ways to maintain a fuller head of hair. Men experience some degree of baldness, or alopecia, at a higher rate than women, but both sexes experience a form of hair loss as they age. About 40 percent of men aged 35 or older see noticeable hair loss. That number jumps to 80 percent by the time a man turns 85. For women, 80 percent will see noticeable hair loss by the time they turn 60. Over-the-counter and prescription products claim to restore hair, and some do an okay job of fulfilling that promise.
But if you’re not seeing results with traditional hair restoration methods, or if you want a more permanent solution to your hair loss, then consider a surgical hair transplant like NeoGraft. Patients often wonder if Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a reliable method. In short, it is. NeoGraft, which employs the FUE technology to restore hair loss, offers the closest solution to permanent hair restoration currently on the market. So how long does a hair transplant last?
Permanent Hair Restoration
This is one of the most commonly asked questions we get at Nashville Hair Doctor. Most patients are tired of the trial and error approach of using over-the-counter or prescription restoration products and are ready for a more permanent solution. And yet they are skeptical about the results of a surgical method. Do they wear off over time, and is it worth having the procedure?
The answer: Surgical hair transplants are a permanent solution to hair loss. The reason a hair transplant is permanent has to do with where the hair is harvested: The hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head, an area that rarely experiences hair loss, even with increasing age. Therefore, the hair taken from this area will continue to grow into old age. Few patients require more than one treatment, though some may choose additional treatments to achieve an even fuller head of hair.
FUE vs the Strip Method
Since the 1960s, doctors in the U.S. have been using various forms of surgery to restore lost hair, but methods have evolved in the last 50 years. Today, there are two major methods for hair transplants that both produce excellent results.
Follicular Unit Strip Surgery, mostly referred to the Strip Method, is a procedure where doctors take a strip of skin from the back of the scalp, divide the piece of scalp into small grafts with follicles intact, and implant the grafts to the parts of the patient’s head affected by hair loss.
With FUE, which stands for Follicular Unit Extraction, doctors shave the back of the head where hair grows more abundantly, extract individual follicles from that area and transplant those follicles to the area with hair loss. Both methods use existing hair, typically extracted from the back of the scalp, to boost hair growth in areas affected by alopecia. The difference lies in how the hair is harvested.
How NeoGraft Works
NeoGraft uses the FUE hair transplant technology to extract and implant follicles using pneumatic pressure. Developed in Germany, the NeoGraft machine enjoys great popularity among U.S.-based practices, and it’s now in its fourth generation. In addition, NeoGraft is approved by the FDA. It’s a safe and effective treatment option for men and women who want fuller heads of hair.
While FUE is considered a surgical procedure, there is no need for general anesthesia. With the help of some local anesthesia to numb the scalp, NeoGraft is a virtually pain-free procedure.
Cost and Results of Hair Transplants
We’ve established that NeoGraft is effective. It works better than anything else to reverse hair loss. But what will a hair transplant cost you? That depends. Each patient requires a different number of grafts depending on the severity of hair loss. On average, NeoGraft costs from $5 to $9 per graft. If your FUE session requires 2,000 hair grafts, then costs can add up quickly. Insurance likely won’t cover the procedure since it’s elective.
Because NeoGraft hair transplants require a significant investment, patients expect good results. NeoGraft delivers results. Hair growth and regrowth take time, but many patients see results within three to six months. After a year, the transplanted follicles and existing follicles should be working together to produce a normal, healthy head of hair.
