NeoGraft Hair Transplant

Hair transplantation for men with Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

The Battle Against Hair Loss

You look in the mirror. You see that your hairline is receding. Not only that – a closer inspection reveals that skin is showing through your hair at the crown.

Why is this happening and what can be done?

First, you should know that you are not alone. Male pattern baldness, which accounts for 95% of all hair loss in men, is estimated to affect half of all men by the age of 50. Some men experience its onset in their early 20s.

The solution: a hair transplant. Male pattern baldness typically does not affect the back of the head. Using donor hair from that area and transplanting it to the balding or thinning areas can restore your hairline and crown to a full head of natural hair – all in a single, one-day procedure.

At Nashville Hair Doctor, we know what’s important to you. You are looking for good hair growth results, but you want to be discreet. You don’t want signs of any procedure to be visible, and you can’t miss much work while you’re recovering. And if you’re honest, you would much prefer a virtually pain- and hassle-free procedure.

A NeoGraft hair transplant does all those things, and more.

Taking the first step toward hair restoration has never been easier! With a few photos and some information from you, we can evaluate your hair loss and develop a restoration plan.

How NeoGraft Works: A Look at FUE Hair Transplantation

NeoGraft® is a hair transplant method based on Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). It uses pneumatic pressure to extract individual “grafts” of hair from the “donor” area. A graft typically contains several hair follicles, and the donor area is the part of the scalp at the back of the head where the follicles are resistant to hair loss caused by Male Pattern Baldness. Once the hair grafts are extracted, they are artfully reimplanted in the balding areas of the scalp with a technique akin to a pinprick.

Extracting hair in the smallest possible increments or “follicular units” avoids the downsides of the traditional “strip method,” where a strip of the patient’s scalp is surgically removed and then dissected. NeoGraft® does not require a scalpel. It utilizes an automated handpiece that creates little to no discomfort for patients during their procedure.

What to Expect During Your Hair Transplant Procedure

Each hair transplant is different, but you can get a good idea of what it’s like by listening to former patients. David Bernard is a Nashville Hair Doctor patient who was interviewed on the Nashville Today Show six months after his procedure.

During an FUE hair transplant procedure, a nurse first numbs the scalp. Some patients opt fo the PRO-NOX pain management system for additional comfort. The doctor or technician then identifies the donor hair follicles best suited for transplantation and uses the NeoGraft device to extract individual hair grafts, then sorts and stores them in a saline or Hypothermosol solution. In the next step, these grafts are carefully implanted into the previously marked recipient sites, making sure proper angle and orientation are preserved for an aesthetically pleasing result.

After the procedure, your scalp will be covered in hundreds of small red dots marking both the extraction and recipient sites. It will take 7-10 days for these to scab over and fall off. Most patients resume their regular activities within 1-2 days but may opt to stay out of the public eye until the scabs are gone.

David recalls his one-day procedure as easy and pain-free, being able to watch TV most of the time. His advice:

“It’s very important to follow all the post-op instructions to get good results.”

To see what you might expect during your recovery, take a look at Memphis Hair Doctor patient John, who had a 2,500 graft hair transplant. You will note that the biggest change in John’s progress has occurred between months 3 and 6. This is very normal, as the growth cycles really kick in between months 3 and 4. Like John, many patients achieve excellent results by month 6, with additional thickness expected to develop until 12-14 months.

John wanted density focused on the hairline, so the crown appears lighter than it could have been. He is very happy with his results at 6 months, as was his barber.

“He said that if he didn’t know me and I walked into his shop today that he would never guess that I had had a transplant.”

The Advantages of NeoGraft Hair Restoration

If you want to regrow your own natural hair with many options of how to wear it, a NeoGraft hair transplant is an ideal solution. Specifically, here are the advantages of NeoGraft vs other hair transplant methods:

NATURAL-LOOKING RESULTS: Your newly implanted hair follicles will follow the natural hair growth cycle, allowing you to wear your preferred hairstyle, short or long. A hair transplant requires patience but your results will continue to improve over time, with full realization at 12-14 months post-procedure.

MINIMAL DOWNTIME: The recovery from a NeoGraft® hair transplant is very swift. Most patients are able to return to their regular activities the next day but may opt to stay at home until all visible signs of the procedure have faded (about 7-10 days).

NO LINEAR SCAR: The tiny incisions made by the NeoGraft® device to extract and insert follicles require no stitches or staples and heal without any visible scarring. This is a major advantage over the strip method of hair transplantation, which results in a linear scar at the back of the head.

HIGH PATIENT SATISFACTION: FUE hair restoration can be performed on all hair types – fine, coarse, Asian, African-American. It also does not require the entire head to be shaved. Due to its natural-looking results and easy recovery, NeoGraft® consistently receives one of the highest “worth it” ratings on Realself.com

Frequently Asked Questions

An ideal candidate for a hair transplant is in relatively good health with a healthy supply of hair in the donor area (typically the back of the scalp). This is the area generally not affected by male pattern baldness (except in rare cases). In addition, you are a good candidate for NeoGraft if you want to wear your hair short or would like to camouflage any scars from previous linear harvests. The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for a hair transplant is to request a free quote.

Follicular Unit Extraction can be performed on any hair, male or female. However, male pattern baldness is by far the most common cause of hair loss in men, and it leaves in place healthy hair at the back of the head that is resistant to hair loss. This is the area from where the donor hair is harvested. Women, on the other hand, much more often experience thinning hair that is equally distributed all over the head and therefore more difficult to effectively replace with a hair transplant.

Due to this difficulty to achieve the desired outcome in women, we currently only treat male patients at Nashville Hair Doctor.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) are two modern hair transplant methods that have become very popular in the United States. There is less of a difference between the two than one might think. Both methods involve extracting hair from the “donor area” of a person’s scalp and implanting it in balding and/or thinning areas. The implantation process is virtually the same. But there is one major difference on the extraction side: With FUE, the hair is extracted in very small groupings from 1-4 follicles each, also called a graft. With FUT, the hair is harvested in a strip (hence, the “strip method”) that is then separated into the follicular units slated for implantation. The upside of FUT is that it can typically be achieved faster, but the downside is that it leaves behind a permanent linear scar in the donor area. FUE achieves the same density and coverage without a scar.

The cost of your hair transplant will depend on the number of grafts you will need. Each graft can contain several hairs, which is an important distinction you need to consider when comparing prices. At Nashville Hair Doctor our starting prices for hair transplants range from $5,500 (1,000 grafts) to $10,500 (2,500 grafts). Please view our price chart for more information, or request a free price quote and virtual consultation. Please note that our price quotes are all-inclusive – no added fees or surcharges. We offer interest-free payment plans via several financing providers. Out of town patients qualify for a travel discount.

You do not have to have your entire head shaved prior to a hair transplant. Patients can keep their hair on top if they so wish, without negatively affecting the outcome. At Nashville Hair Doctor we recommend a haircut prior to your procedure. The back and sides need to be cut all the way down with a “0” guard. This can be faded up to 1 inch max. length on top if you prefer to keep a style. Of course you may elect to buzz your entire head (this will also ensure uniform growth), but you are not required to.

Modern hair restoration procedures are much less invasive and therefore less painful than they used to be. Even though it is considered a surgical procedure, a NeoGraft hair or beard transplant is only minimally-invasive. You can expect some minor discomfort after the procedure as your scalp and/or face heals. During the procedure, a local anesthetic is injected in the area that is worked on so that you won’t feel any pain throughout the procedure. You may feel the sensation of slight tugging and pulling as the technician extracts and implants your hair grafts, but it won’t cause pain. Most patients are pleasantly surprised how easy and pain-free hair and beard transplant procedures are. If you have a lower tolerance for the type of discomfort caused by hair restoration, please ask us about our PRO-NOX patient-controlled pain management system.

We recommend that you wait until Day 3 after your hair transplant before washing your hair. Please read our tips on how to wash you hair during the first week of recovery as well as our complete set of instructions for a successful hair transplant recovery.

It is important to know that transplanted hair follicles act just like normal hair, meaning that cyclical shedding will occur, much like it does to the rest of your hair. The grafted hair will stay in place for about 2-3 weeks after transplantation, and then it will fall out, making room for new hair to grow in. Don’t be alarmed when you experience shedding up to a month after your procedure, whether you had a hair or a beard transplant. This is a perfectly normal occurrence, and new natural hair growth will resume within 3-4 months.

You should allow for a week to ten days of recovery after a NeoGraft hair transplant. Please note that this is not time spent in bed. Most patients are perfectly fine to pursue day-to-day activities within 1 or at most 2 days of their procedure. However, you can expect some swelling within the first week post-op, and it takes about 7-10 days for the small punctures of hair implantation to scab over and fall off. Once the scabs have fallen off, a hair transplant is typically undetectable. The growth in the new areas of transplantation will occur slowly following the natural growth cycle of your hair.

More than any other procedure, hair transplants require patience. Because hair growth is slow, it will take time for your hair transplant to achieve its full effect. Results will vary person to person, but most of our patients have reported significant results within three to six months of treatment. Within a year, your transplanted hair follicles should be growing at a normal rate, letting you enjoy the full effects of the procedure. Read all about the timeline of hair growth after NeoGraft.

HypoThermosol is an innovative solution to temporarily store hair grafts in during transplantation. It has been shown to improve the preservation and functionality of the harvested hair follicles. At Nashville Hair Doctor, HypoThermosol is included in all hair restoration procedures of 2,500 grafts or more.

NeoGraft is an FDA-approved minimally-invasive hair transplant procedure that in recent years has overtaken the traditional “strip” method of hair restoration in popularity and aesthetics. Its revolutionary technology uses pneumatic pressure to extract hair follicles or grafts from the back and sides of your head where follicles are resistant to male pattern balding, and reinsert those follicles into areas of the scalp or face where density is desired. In the hands of a skilled technician, a NeoGraft hair transplant can achieve completely natural-looking growth in balding or thinner areas while maintaining enough density at the donor site so as to ensure the procedure is undetectable.

The NeoGraft Follicular Unit Extraction technology is FDA-approved and very safe. It is a relatively minor surgical procedure that can be performed under mild local anesthesia to numb the scalp. Therefore the risks associated with general anesthesia or even heavy sedation do not apply. The fact that FUE hair transplants are so easy and virtually pain-free is one reasons they have grown in popularity to rank among the most-performed cosmetic surgeries for men.

Yes, the NeoGraft hair transplantation technology is FDA-approved. Originally developed in Germany, it is now in its 4th generation and has become very popular in the United States. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) with NeoGraft is a minimally-invasive and very safe procedure that does not require general anesthesia.

Yes, a NeoGraft hair transplant is permanent for the transplanted hair. During a NeoGraft hair restoration procedure, hair follicles are typically transplanted from the back of your head to your scalp or facial recipient areas. Your hair will continue to grow strong and healthy like it did in your donor area previously. And because this hair was taken from an area genetically resistant to the DHT hormone that causes male pattern balding, it is able to grow strong in those once sparse areas. Many patients choose to take a DHT blocker such as Propecia to help preserve their restoration results by limiting future male pattern balding. Your NeoGraft consultant will be able to assess the stage of your hair loss during an initial consultation. Overall, hair transplants are as close to permanent procedures as you get in cosmetic surgery. For the majority of patients, one single transplantation session is enough.
