Reverse Hair Loss with Minimally-Invasive Hair Restoration
Hair restoration is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to reverse hair loss. It is the same as a hair transplant. At the Nashville Hair Doctor, we prefer to talk about hair restoration rather than hair transplants. Transplants have been around since the late 1950s, and back in those days they weren’t the easiest procedures to undergo. They could be painful and often weren’t effective. Many people still associate negative feelings with hair transplants and shy away from having a procedure that could change their life.
But in the last decade or so, the field of hair transplant and restoration has been revolutionized. Today’s advanced hair restoration technology available at hair clinics and hair replacement centers allows you to regrow your own hair without having to worry about any visible marks. In a minimally-invasive procedure, a surgeon or technician can extract individual hair follicles from the “donor” area at the back of your head and implant them in the recipient areas affected by hair loss.
FUE vs Strip Method
There are essentially two ways to extract or harvest hair from the donor area. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), and the Strip method. The Strip method is also referred to as Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), or sometimes the Bosley method. Our chart outlines the main differences between FUE and the Strip/FUT method:
Individual follicles (follicular units) using pneumatic pressure
Surgical removal of strip of hair
Preparing Hair for Implantation
Not necessary. Follicular units are stored until implantation.
Hair strip is dissected into pieces or follicular units for transplantation
Yes. The surgeon. uses a scalpel to remove the strip of hair.
None. Small puncture scab over on their own within a week
Yes. The incision is closed with stitches or staples.
Patients can return to regular activities and even strenuous exercise as early as the next day. Red marks from follicle extraction and implantation disappear within 10 days.
Doctors typically recommend a minimum of 2 weeks of limited exercise to prevent scar widening and allow for healing. A follow-up visit is needed for removal of sutures.
The FUE method of hair harvesting uses pneumatic pressure to extract individual grafts of hair, with each graft containing 1-4 follicles. For the so-called Strip Method, an entire strip of hair is removed from the back of your head and then separated into many smaller graft-size units. At the Nashville Hair Doctor, we prefer the FUE method over the Strip method for several reasons.
Whether extracted by FUE or the Strip Method, the grafts are implanted in the recipient area the same way: The technician first uses a small tool to punch tiny holes in the scalp and then inserts the follicles into them.

However, the outcome of a hair transplant depends as much on the skill of the person administering it as it does on the technology.
