While it is more common for men to be affected by premature balding, women can also suffer from hair loss. If you’re a woman who has experienced any hair loss, whether from aging, illness, or genetic disposition, it has probably affected your self-esteem and confidence. A NeoGraft hair transplant for women may be the answer.

The NeoGraft Hair Transplant for Women

Whether you are a male or female patient, the NeoGraft hair restoration procedure follows the same steps. During an initial consultation, a medical consultant assesses your hair (this can also be done using our online quote tool.) Your consultant will determine if you are a candidate for a hair transplant, how many grafts you will need for a successful procedure, and what add-ons you would like, such as PRP injections or HypoThermosol graft storage.

On the day of your NeoGraft procedure, the hair transplant specialist or technician will give you a mild local anesthetic and then proceed to extract hair grafts from the donor area. For men, this area is typically at the back of the head. Some women may not have an obvious donor area but rather a more even spread of thinning hair, which can make it harder to get good results from a hair transplant.

Once the hair grafts are harvested, which each graft consisting of up to 4 individual follicles, they are implanted into the recipient area you have outlined during your consultation. The procedure itself is virtually pain-free, but you may experience mild discomfort as the small incisions from extraction and implantation heal. This may take from 2-7 days after your procedure. Since general anesthesia isn’t needed, a NeoGraft hair transplant is a very safe and easy procedure and is typically administered by a technician. However, a surgeon or plastic surgeon should be the supervising doctor on site.

What Causes Hair Loss in Women?

Most people think hair loss is exclusively a problem for men, but many women are affected by it too. Hair loss typically manifests itself differently in women than in men. While most men with hair loss suffer from “male pattern baldness” where the hair at the top of the head falls out first, women often experience more evenly distributed hair loss or thinning hair. In those cases, hair transplant with long-lasting outcomes are harder to achieve, because there is no obvious donor area of healthy hair to harvest from.

It is therefore important for women to know what causes their hair loss, and if there is any pattern baldness similar to male transplant candidates. Here are a few potential causes of female hair loss:

  1. Postpartum hair loss. This is only temporary and typically goes away after 6 months. See our tips to disguise your thinning hair.
  2. Hair loss around incision sites from previous plastic surgery
  3. Trauma or scarring from accidents or burns, or extreme stress or illness
  4. Thyroid problems
  5. Female pattern hair loss or “androgenetic alopecia.” This  hereditary condition affects about 30 million American women.

Depending on the cause, your hair doctor or specialist may recommend a course of action. Not all female hair loss is best addressed with a hair transplant.

Female Hair Restoration: NeoGraft vs the Strip Method

NeoGraft is the least invasive hair restoration treatment available today, and it delivers the best results with little to no downtime. It’s a fast and easy way to regrow your own hair in a natural way—permanently. And it has some advantages that are particularly beneficial to women.

The two most common minimally-invasive hair transplant procedures are Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), also called strip method, and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). The main difference is thman and woman with nice hair sharing intimate momentat with FUT your hair is harvested as a strip removed from the back of your head, whereas with FUE the hair grafts are extracted individually. Since most women suffering from hair loss battle with thinning hair and not baldness, it’s harder to harvest hair in strips because the donor hair isn’t all located in one area. FUE is the perfect alternative. It allows the technician administering the procedure to extract hair grafts  from all over the head to keep the resulting look more natural.

Compared to FUT, NeoGraft FUE hair restoration has several advantages:

  • It requires no stitches or staples
  • Hair grafts can be harvested from all over the head
  • It leaves no unsightly linear scar to worry about
  • The recovery time is fast
